Coding Automation of Patient Discharge Summaries

Abstract

Each patient leaving hospital gets a letter summarizing all the examinations and treatments undergone. This letter is a communication tool between the hospital and external care staff and is also used for declaring the doctor performances carried out to the national health care system in order to finance hospital activity. A team of file clerks encodes the information contained in these letters into the International Classification of Diseases: ICD-9-CM. The CAPADIS project aims at using information extraction tools to automate this process.
